Guardian Angels

Angels are divine beings which are often, but not only, associated with religion. Guardian Angels are thought to be angels which are always present with an individual, protecting them from harm and death till their decreed time. They can take many shapes and forms to serve their noble purpose, with many people narrating stories of how they were divinely guided or saved from harms way by their guardian angel. An example of such a survey is one published in TIME magazine in 2008, which provides the staggering figures that 55% of Americans believe they have been helped by guardian angels at least once in their lives.

I recently stumbled upon a heart touching story of how sometimes people or animals can appear in our lives and serve the purpose of a guardian angel, guiding us when we really need it. The author of the story is unknown, and I believe something so beautiful and original has to be a true story:

'Just up the road from my home is a field, with two horses in it. From a distance, each horse looks like any other horse.

But if you get a closer look you will notice something quite interesting...

One of the horses is blind.

His owner has chosen not to have him put down, but has made him a safe and comfortable barn to live in.

This alone is pretty amazing.

But if you stand nearby and listen, you will hear the sound of a bell. It is coming from a smaller horse in the field.

Attached to the horse's halter is a small, copper-colored bell. It lets the blind friend know where the other horse is, so he can follow.

As you stand and watch these two friends you'll see that the horse with the bell is always checking on the blind horse, and that the blind horse will listen for the bell and then slowly walk to where the other horse is, trusting he will not be led astray.

When the horse with the bell returns to the shelter of the barn each evening, he will stop occasionally to look back, making sure that the blind friend isn't too far behind to hear the bell.

Like the owners of these two horses, God does not throw us away just because we are not perfect. Or because we have problems or challenges.

He watches over us and even brings others into our lives to help us when we are in need.

Sometimes we are the blind horse, being guided by the little ringing bell of those who God places in our lives.'

And at other times we are the guide horse, helping others to find their way.

Angels are magical, divine beings that are often associated with religion, dating back to the days of Judaism. The term 'Angels' is derived from the ancient Greek work 'angelos' which means 'Messengers'. Angels have been associated with bringing Divine messages from God, as in case of Islam where the Quran is revealed to the Holy Prophet Muhammad by Angel Jibrael; protection from evil, as in Judaism where Angel Michael is seen as a protector of Isreal and even healing, as in Christanity where Angel Raphael is associated with having divine healing properties.

Interestingly enough, all the three angels mentioned above are common in all three books of all the three major religions mentioned above, i.e. in the Quran (Islam), the Bible (Christanity) and the Torah (Judaism). Angel Jibrael of Islam is the same as Angel Gabriel of Christanity and Judaism; Angel Michael of Christanity and Judaism is the same as Angel Mikael in Islam; similarly Angel Raphael of Christanity and Judaism is known as Angel Israfel in Islam.

In today's time and age, angels are now no longer affiliated only with religion. Angels have been used in powerful pieces of great literature such as 'Paradise Lost' by John Milton, 'The Angel' by William Blake and Paradiso by Dante. Popular literature portrays them as beings of light, with fancy large wings to fly with and a golden halo on their head. They have been subject to many fanciful imaginations, and even resulted in best selling movies such 'City of Angels' (1998).

Angels are associated with a lot of mystical properties and responsibilities. They are also associated with difficult tasks such as the Angel of Death who collects the soul from the human body to return to God. There is also the concept of 'Fallen Angels' which is controversial, with some saying that there is no mention of fallen angels in religion, whereas another minority defining them as those angels who have disobeyed God and cast down from heaven. This view is supported by some adorning to the Christian faith, but not in Islam since according to Islam, angels always obey God. A rather bizarre take on Fallen Angels has been taken in History Channels documentary 'Angels and Aliens' where Fallen Angels are explained to be aliens who have been exiled from their host planet.

Majority of people also believe in the concept of 'Guardian Angels' who are always with an individual, guiding them and protecting them from harm. A survey published in TIME magazine in 2008 gives staggering figures, stating that 55% of Americans believe they have actually been helped by a guardian angel at least once in their life times. When related to religion, Guardian Angels have also been mentioned as in Islam where they are known as Mu'aqqibat which protects a person from death until it is destined for him. The concept is slightly controversial in Judaism and Christanity. The theory of Guardian Angels is most accepted, transcending religious boundaries. A similar notion can be traced back as early as ancient Greece to the great philosopher Plato, who mentioned in his work 'Phaedo' how God sends a spirit to look over each person.

Whether one believes in Angels or not, there is no doubt that they have remained an important part of human history, whether as fragments of imagination, aliens or powerful messengers from the Creator Himself.

Moschino ASOS cheat

Images found on Coco Rox

Just a quick post today - more lengthy outfit posts coming soon!

Nothing like finding a designer replica to get you in the mood for some more summer wardrobe shopping; this cute ASOS belt is a dead-ringer for the much-coveted Moschino number (without the obvious Moschino lettering of course). I'd even go as far as to say that this belt may even take on the Moschino belt in the cool-stakes by a) including french (god dammit the French are cool) and b) being only a tenner! Cheap and cheerful, yet a great way of updating any outfit.
I want!

For those that follow my blog (hello!) I have now finished my exams! The last one was this morning - I don't want to jinx anything by saying it went well, but it was a lot less scary that I made it out to be. Fingers (and toes and arms and legs...) crossed I get my three As come results day!

Happy Wednesday

Outfit of the Week #5

My skirt I ordered from the Motel 50% off Secret Sale (see post here) arrived today! Thought it was high time I did another outfit post, and since the sun decided to pop out for an hour or so it was the perfect opportunity! As excited I am about my skirt I'm also dreading my exam on Wednesday, which I feel is to blame for my troubled/angry facial expressions. Sorry about that. Still, focus on the outfit, not ma face!

Skirt, Motel; crop top, DIY; necklaces, Topshop sale; shoes, Office
Although I'm really glad I bought this skirt, it was a bit tricky to style without looking like I was on my way to the office, or the opposite which seemed to be some kind of sexy secretary slut. Not a good look. So as you can imagine I was pretty chuffed to rediscover this DIY gem in the back of my wardrobe! I made about fifty of these crop tops a few years ago to help raise money for my sister's trip to Ghana with the Sabre Trust - each one was handmade by moi out of authentic Ghanaian material, hence the cool patterns and colour combinations. We kept two of the crop tops for my sister and myself, but I confess I've never worn mine much; now I've found it again I'm sure I will do in the future. It'll be nice to tell people I actually made part of my outfit myself!

The shoes and necklaces I've had for ages - they're pretty much my go-to accessories for nights out, and the chunky heel on these suede Office shoes makes them so comfy. I actually bought them for myself last year as a reward for passing my driving theory test - spent about £80 on them but I'm glad I did as they've served me well! I think it's important to own a sturdy pair of black heels as they go with everything and are super versatile. Do you have a go-to item you couldn't live without?

More outfit posts to come soon!

Goodnight Macaroon

Black Full Skater/Circle Skirt

Chiffon Crepe Asymmetric Top
Crochet Mesh Lace Dress
Cobalt Scarf Print Silk Pants
As soon as I saw the word 'macaroon' in the title I was initially sceptical  - I've had some rather embarrassing macaroon experiences of late, namely dropping complimentary macaroon all over the plush turquoise carpet of a Tiffany & Co store in central London... not good. Weird culinary phobias aside, Goodnight Macaroon is a really good one-of-a-kind online shop with a variety of really cool pieces. And who can resist another cracking online shopping destination from the great US of A?!

I'm a big fan of this black skater skirt (top picture) as I've been after one for a while; somehow every other skirt I've seen online in a similar style has just ended up looking a bit cheap? Don't know if anyone else has had that problem, maybe I'm just being fussy!

There's also a lot of other clothes and accessories I've got my eye on; shipping to the UK is $15 which is about £9.50, so not too bad, especially when the pieces you're getting are one of a kind! For anyone that follows Native Fox, you'll also have noticed that she's a fan of the brand, modelling their asymmetrical front slit skirt, bellow.
Asymmetrical Front Slit Chiffon Skirt

So far my shopping cart is amounting to about £70 worth including postage... that's do-able right? Right? Maybe I shouldn't get too ahead of myself...

Hope everyone's having a good week!

Lilac - new summer colour obsession

Socks, denim dress, rucksack, bra and pants, all Topshop; shirt and lace vest, The Kooples; platform shoe, ASOS; leather bag, ALDO; Maybelline Forever Strong nail varnish in Lilac Charm

Bit of a colour-based obsession for me at the moment. Since the peplum top I bought a few weeks ago (see my outfit post here) I have since obtained a skater dress aaaaand the very nail varnish you see above, all in a beautiful lilac colour. And I have to say, my nails look cracking, if fairly poorly painted by my own fair hand. But the colour looks good, which is the main thing. If I move my hands fast enough at all times, people will only notice the colour... in theory.

My nails - I do have a thumb, promise.
No one tells you the difficulty in taking a nail picture without any help;
taking a good photo one-handed is hard goddammit!
Next on my list of lilacy things to purchase will be the striped Topshop rucksack (above) - I feel like a good-looking rucksack is exactly what I'll be needing at university to carry all of my studenty objects. Won't be mentioning it to the mother though - her ideal rucksack is probably one from Millets, and she'll be offended if she buys me one and I don't use it. I refuse to start uni in London with a Millets rucksack thank you very much. I'll be going to lectures, not hiking across the alps!

I'm pretty pleased with my skater dress too - delivered yesterday, it'll be used in an Outfit of the Week post soon I hope, as long as the weather brightens up enough for suitable photo-taking conditions. As expected the belt included with the dress broke within five seconds of opening the package, but considering it's pretty much made of paper I wasn't too fussed. I'll probably cut off the belt loops on the dress anyway - should make the dress more versatile. Apparently I'm becoming some kind of Missguided hoarder - always a weeny bit embarrassing when the delivery man greets you by name at the door; didn't realise I'd ordered so much from there recently! This dress was only £12.99 though, so it felt rude not to.

Dress by Missguided - outfit post coming soon!
Anyone else bought any cool lilac things recently? I'm always on the look out for more! Although I really should spend less time shopping and more time revising.... shit happens.

Three Floor

Another one of my excellent procrastination sessions resulted in my finding of Three Floor - the promise of my pay cheque this coming Friday is filling me with exciting shopping ideas, and ultimately, debt before I've even started! Always the way. I also feel I need to cheer myself up as my exam went less-than-well yesterday; it wasn't particularly awful, but I knew it wasn't A grade stuff which is annoying. I just hope I've done enough to get my grades for UCL!! Last exam next Wednesday, wish me luck!

Anyway, I was drawn to Three Floor following my recent stalking of Ring My Bell  - for those that don't know, it's a pretty damn famous blog by Ashley Madekwe, an actress originally from London currently living in LA. Her recent post entitled Hen Night showed off this gorgeous dress, which, you've guessed it, is from Three Floor:
Photo from Ring My Bell by Ashley Madekwe
God damn it doesn't she look gorgeous?! Serious shoe envy as well. Need to get myself some of those.

I was expecting Three Floor to be some ridiculously expensive LA label with huge delivery price tags, but surprisingly it's a fairly reasonably priced high-end brand with some really cool designs. Some are a weenie bit too out there for any event I could hope to wear one of those dresses to - don't think my family would appreciate me rocking up to Grandad's 80th birthday dinner in this ensemble for example:
Colour Code Dress, £138

I am however still in love with Ashley's choice in dress - the simplicity of the design lets the low back be the feature, and if you've got skin as flawless as hers then you may as well get it out in the classiest way possible! The dress itself is a mere £68 which is ASOS prices if you think about it, so really there's nothing to complain about!
Flare Neoprene Dress, £68

... unless you're me, and look like you're dying if you wear yellow. I'm not joking. Put me in a yellow t-shirt and watch my skin reject every form of healthy-glow that was once there, artificial or otherwise. My mum describes me as looking 'peaky' in yellow. 'PEAKY' IS NOT A GOOD LOOK. So for the love of all things fashionable, Three Floor I urge you to launch this dress in another colour! Because I really do have to have it, but in yellow there is no way that would be a good idea. I'd be better off throwing my money off a cliff. Or buying sportswear!

Has anyone else experienced the anger of loving everything about an item of clothing except for the colour? This happens far too often to me!

Hope everyone's enjoying their week!

P.S: I don't own any of the photographs used in this post - all credit  goes to Ashley Madekwe and Three Floor (don't want to piss anyone off!)
