Samurai Mama

Yesterday was my birthday and Rubin took me to dinner at Samurai Mama. I have wanted to go there for awhile but am always skeptical of Japanese restaurants. My grandmother had a huge hand in raising me (I saw her almost everyday until she passed away when I was 18) and her cooking was out of this world. Needless to say, I have very high standards. I am also a vegetarian and many Japanese restaurants are not super veg-friendly. Samurai Mama was epic. On the menu is a collection of small plates, sushi and a variety of udon styles and toppings. The restaurant is beautiful and everything we ate was heart warming and delicious. Did I mention they have an imported Japanese water filtration system so all the water used in the food preparation, all the water for the dashi broth and all the water you drink is "the purest, cleanest water you will ever try in New York"? Did I mention it's cheap? It's my new favorite place.

House-made tsukemono and my shiso mojito.

The kabocha pumpkin cooked in sweet dashi tasted just like my grandmother's.

Inari and soy sauce three ways; plain, with a little wasabi, with lots of wasabi. So convenient.

For me, this is the ultimate comfort food. I'd take it over mac and cheese any day.

The hoji tea pudding was delicious but I really wish they had some daifuku or kanten desserts. That would REALLY make me feel like a kid again. Maybe someday.

Eating»» Open Face Sandwich

When it comes to lunch, I want easy and tasty. Most days I eat an open face sandwich with various toppings. I always have LOTS of veggies and nutritional yeast is essential. I like to marinate and bake tofu and keep it in the fridge for easy snacking!

Add a kale smoothie and you will have hours of DIY energy!

The Chocolate Room

It is very dangerous to get drunk in Park Slope because it always means I will end up here. The Chocolate Room has the most incredibly decadent, sinful, orgasmic desserts in NYC. Everything is made from scratch onsite. Their chocolate layer cake is the best cake I've ever had. Did I mention they have booze and are open till midnight on weekends? Every dessert come with a pairing suggestion. This place is basically heaven.

☩DIY☩ Air Plant Display

Things you need for this DIY:
an air plant
✝ old wood frame
✝ small nails
✝ hammer
✝ string
✝ scissors

Total time:
10 mins

Total cost:
How much is string these days?

Air plants are great for super lazy me.

Hammer the little nails around the frame at random. Ignore my nail polish, it was the day after a manicure, I swear.

Then, wrap the string around the nails, cat's cradle style.

Add the air plant.

Have a plant party!

♆Recipe♆ Chia Berry Jam

✝ 1 tsp chia
✝ 1/4 cup berries
Optional ingredients:
honey, maple syrup, cinnamon, ginger (fresh/powder), lemon zest, lavender, cardamom, black pepper...the list goes on...

Prep time:
15-20 mins

1 serving
35 calories per serving
I love jam but it's full of sugar and lacks nutrition so I try not to eat it, but lately, I've been craving yogurt and jam on toast. Chia to the rescue! Chia is one of my favorite super foods. It's ridiculously high soluble fiber content makes it the most healthy thickener I can think of. Chia and berries, a match made in heaven.

I make this one serving at a time but it would be just as easy to make a lot of it. It's the perfect addition to a weekend brunch. I bet it would stay in the fridge for a day or two as well.

I use frozen fruit because the freezing process breaks down the fruit a bit and makes it easy to mash, but fresh would work too.

Let the berries defrost for a few minutes.

Mash em.

Add any extras (I used cinnamon, ginger powder and lemon zest) and let the chia jam set up for 10-15 mins. It's so easy! No boiling, no canning, no pots to wash and you can be really creative. I couldn't wait a full 10 mins, I just ate it juicy. So fresh, so healthy and so versatile. Maybe mango/lime tomorrow...

It goes really well with the fresh raw goat milk yogurt we get delivered.
